Can i get lifetime learning credit if my taxable income after deduction is zero?

I worked but because of deductions, my taxable income is lessthan zero. When I did the worksheet, it asks me to use the tax amount from 1040 - which is 0 and calculates the nonrefundable credit - to basically zero? Am I missing something?
