Can you cover existing ceilings with new drywall? Have remodeling job inside w/popcorn ceiling?

We have vents in the ceiling along with changes in the lighting fixture placements. The drywall contractor recommended just re covering the whole ceiling with new drywall. Does anyone have any experience in having this done to their ceilings?
